The design is around the concept of microperforated panel (MPP) absorption, a theory first introduced by Maa (1975). MPPs are known for their ability to absorb sound through the interaction of sound waves with tiny perforations in a rigid or semi-rigid material. When sound passes through these perforations, it creates a Helmholtz resonance effect, which dissipates energy and reduces noise levels.
Saccater Moment Earplugs utilize a dual-cavity microperforated structure to achieve frequency-selective noise reduction. The 1st cavity (top layer) attenuates high frequencies through Helmholtz resonance, while the 2nd cavity (bottom layer) further enhances attenuation through quarter-wavelength resonance. The 600-mesh polyester membrane acts as the final filter, leveraging viscous friction and acoustic impedance to reduce noise while preserving low-frequency clarity.
We tested various soundproofing materials, including rubber sheets, sponges of different densities, and metal meshes of various specifications. Ultimately, we determined that the 600-mesh polyester membrane was the most effective in eliminating noise in the 1000Hz-8000Hz range while preserving the 200Hz-800Hz frequency range, which is most pleasant to the human ear. This enables targeted background noise reduction.
