Wait, earplugs? Is that right? In a website that hosts audio related gear reviews? Well yes, because we all need some moments of silence so we can rest our ears and keep enjoying our favorite music.
Noise reducing earplugs are very useful for dozens of everyday applications, for people with noise sensitivity, to sleep in your noisy apartment, to focus while studying or reading a book, at the loud environment at your job, while traveling or to attend a live concert without damaging your hearing – just to name a few.
Recent research has shown that there are millions of people who use earplugs on a daily basis. There are various types of earplugs available, made from silicone, foam, wax or even custom molded ones, just like your custom earphones. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages that we are not going to cover in this article.
Saccater is a newly founded brand that specializes in making noise reducing earplugs with replaceable silicone ear tips. They currently offer three models, the Saccater Focus, the Focus Plus and the Moment.
The Focus earplugs consist of an ergonomically shaped plug that accepts the removable silicone ear tips. The soft silicone plug is flexible and acts both like a handle to help you place the earplugs and as a safety mechanism to avoid too deep placement that can damage your ear canal. The Focus earplugs provide 17dB of maximum noise reduction when properly inserted.
The Focus Plus model is exactly the same with the Focus but the package also includes double flange ear tips that add +5dB of extra noise reduction.
The Moment earplugs have a differently designed plug that is solid with an internal acoustic channel that acts like a tiny Helmholtz resonator. This design selectively reduces background noise making the Moment earplugs ideal for applications where you want to stay in contact with your surroundings. The Moment earplugs provide 13dB of noise reduction.
Detailed noise reduction measurements for each model are made by a third party laboratory and are published on the Saccater website.
The Saccater earplugs are reusable and designed to have a long lasting life. You can expect up to five years of service if you take good care and regularly clean the ear tips and the plugs with water without detergent or other chemicals. All the Saccater earplugs are available in various colors to choose from while you can order replacement ear tips from the Saccater website.
What’s in the box
All Saccater models come generously equipped with a handy carrying case, a larger storage box and four sizes of silicone ear tips. The Focus Plus model also includes three extra pairs of double flange ear tips.
An optional accessory is the Saccater Link, a tug-resistant breakaway cord with a magnetic clasp design that securely protects your earplugs and ensures they are never lost. This is a useful accessory but the cord adds audible friction noise.
Wearing experience and noise reduction effectivenes
Wearing the Saccater earplugs is as easy and simple as wearing your favorite earphones. The only thing you have to do is to choose the right size ear tip and then gently push the plug with the tip attached into the ear cavity as deep as the safety allows. Choosing the right size is crucial both for the noise reduction effectiveness and the wearing comfort.
The Saccater earplugs are much more comfortable than the foam earplugs that I regularly use. They are tiny and feather light, they don’t cause any kind of annoyance, you can wear them for hours even while sleeping. They are also very discreet looking so you can wear them outside without attracting any unwanted attention.
I have tested the Saccater earplugs at my home with the kids playing around, while sleeping, at the subway, strolling around the town and in my office. The noise reduction effectiveness is very good and true to the published measurements.
All frequencies are blocked well but the noise reduction effect is better in the middle and the higher ranges as it is to be expected by the laws of physics. The Saccater earplugs can’t block too loud noises that are produced by punching activities, like hammerings or heavy objects falling to the floor, however this is something normal that happens with all types of earplugs. The Focus and the Focus Plus models offer the best noise attenuation while the Moment earplugs selectively cut off the louder only noises, letting you stay in touch with your environment.
High quality foam earplugs can block as much as 35dB of noise but they are not as comfortable and discreet looking as the Saccater earplugs while they don’t last more than a week of frequent use.
The Saccater earplugs are well made, lightweight, very comfortable and long lasting while offering excellent noise reduction. There are three models available to choose the best for your needs and all of them are affordable and well accessorized.
Considering that three pairs of high quality foam earplugs can cost around 5€ and barely last more than a month, then spending €22.95 for the Saccater Focus earplugs that will last for years is a very clever and cost effective buy.
Saccater has not exactly invented the wheel but they have managed to make high quality and affordable earplugs with replaceable ear tips that will help you enjoy the sound of silence for many years.
